Ji Wenyu’s work may be interpreted as a rigorous look at the phenomenon of the development of consumption culture, which dominates modern China, although

he actually prefers his art to be easily readable. In this work, “Build economy, boost consumption and make happy exchange old for new to expand domestic

demand” appears like a slogan from an illusory period “Increase production and improve income” during the “Great Leap Forward”. It’s simple, easy and

exciting. By juxtaposing many images, artist mixes and creates a new visual reality. On both sides of the main painting, he also pictures in a pretty common

way ten identical human portraits staring at their viewers. At the very center of the work, Ji presents daily necessaries in modern life in greatest detail, which radiates to every direction from commodity houses as their center. “Our time keeps changing. So is our life. And it will be better. ” Nevertheless, it can be more crowded and exhausting. In the lower part, there is a pile of construction rubbish and other daily life objects, from which grass fl ourishes and fl owers blossom with butterfl ies fl uttering around. Associated together, these images look like a plain sentence that doesn’t need any explanation.
