EXHIBITION SYNOPSIS
About Transition - Solo Exhibition of Li HuiAfter having exhibited in e.g. Museum ModernerKunstStiftungWien(Vienna), BusanBiennial (Busan) and the National Gallery of China (Beijing), the MannheimerKunstvereinis proud to present Li Hui’sfirst institutional solo show “Transition”in Europe.
Li Hui’sextensive sculptures and installations consists of experimentalconnections of diverse materials such as steel, acrylic, LED and laser light and create enormous and dreamlike scenarios, being based on various philosophical approaches.
Adapted to the 7m high interior space of the MannheimerKunstverein, Li Hui’swork “Untitled”will be on display: a crashed car that was demolished in an accident. The remains are bandaged and fog is rising out if it while they are illuminated by over 13.000 red laser lights mounted to the museum’s ceiling.
In only one work Li Huisucceeds to make the tragedy of this situation appear incredibly aesthetically attractive. By doing so he visualizes two polarizing emotions in one picture: „The idea of transforming something negative into something positive is deeply rooted in Chinese philosophy. Maybe I brought it over into this work unconsciously”, explains Li Hui. Also the influences of Buddhism play a crucial role for the artist –especially the meaning of metempsychosis, which is expressed by the rising fog. This process of transition and change also gave the title to the exhibition “Transition”which will be on show from February 7 to March 21, 2010.
